Oil on wood, George Morland (attributed), romantic landscape with castle ruins and figures George Morland (1762/63–1804), attributed. An atmospheric, romantic landscape depicting the ruins of a medieval castle, executed in oil on wood. At the center of the finely detailed composition, a weathered castle ruin rises on a slightly elevated, grassy hill. Two small figures in colorful clothing enliven the scene. In the foreground, an unpaved path winds through the rolling landscape, while in the background, a vast, gently sloping landscape stretches out beneath an atmospheric, dynamic cloud-filled sky. The subdued, earthy color palette—with finely nuanced shades of green, brown, and gray—along with the effective use of light, lends this small-format painting a special painterly depth. The painting is attributed to the English landscape and genre painter George Morland, who is particularly known for his atmospheric landscape depictions and rural genre scenes. Set in a wide, profiled wooden frame with a gold-colored border. Inscribed “MORLAND” on the lower frame rail. The reverse bears several older auction numbers and handwritten notes. Of particular note is a historic auction label bearing the inscription “MORLAND GEORGES (attributed),” the title “Landscape with Ruins,” and the description “Oil on wood panel, 11 x 16 cm (pendant).” • Artist: George Morland (1762/63–1804), attributed\ • Medium: Oil on wood panel\ • Subject: Romantic landscape with castle ruins and small figures\ • Inscription: “MORLAND” on the frame\ • Reverse: Historic attribution label, as well as several auction numbers and handwritten notes\ • Framing: Wide, profiled wooden frame with gold-colored molding\ • Special feature: Historic auction note with the addition “Pair” Dimensions of the painting: approx. 10.2 × 15 cm without frame The attribution to George Morland is documented by the older label but has not been independently confirmed.
