Oil on linen, "Maria Trost am Kain" South German probably 18th century. Oil on linen, relined, probably South German / Austrian, probably 18th century or early 19th century. Religious devotional painting depicting the Mother of God as intercessor and comforter: Mary with a nimbus in a red robe and dark cloak holds a cloth or ribbon over the reclining Christ child. The depiction is popularly and emotionally conceived and refers to protection, consolation and intercession. The inscriptions are in old script: on the left probably "Maria Trost am Kain", on the right difficult to read, probably beginning with "Hilf alles Sindern/Kindern ...". A handwritten note on the reverse of the stretcher reads "Restored 2003-2004 'Maria Bein/Kain'", although the reading is unclear. Condition due to age and restoration with craquelure, retouching, rubbing, minor losses of color, scratches and darkening. Frame with clear signs of age and use, bumping, wormholes and additions / metal angles on the reverse. Dimensions: 73.5 x 71 cm incl. frame.
