Dubois, Paul (1829–1905) — “Florentine Singer,” bronze with a brown patina, slight wear, inscribed on the plinth: “P. Dubois 1865,” maker’s mark “A. Collas,” height approx. 76 cm, weight approx. 12.5 kg, base recessed with a circumferential inscription “VERDI AUX BLESSES FRANCAIS” ; it is therefore likely a sculpture associated with a fundraising campaign for wounded French soldiers—particularly during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, when special casts of works of art (produced by the Barbedienne foundry) were auctioned off or donated; the proceeds from these sales, which took place under the symbolic patronage of Verdi (the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi) or aid organizations, went entirely to wounded French soldiers.
