Barbedienne, Fondeur” and the hallmark “A. Collas”; the sides feature masks and heads from the Dionysian iconography, including depictions of Bacchus, the god of wine, and Silenus; the decoration is complemented by animal skins attached to the sides beneath the handles; lip rim with a tongue frieze; prominent side handles in the form of intertwined grapevines; polished brass insert, Height x Width (with handles) x Diameter approx. 27 x 45 x 31 cm, total weight: approx. 12 kg—this ancient marble vase from the Roman Imperial period, discovered in 1771 among the ruins of Hadrian’s Villa near Tivoli, gained great popularity during the 19th-century enthusiasm for antiquity; it was celebrated as the epitome of Greco-Roman aesthetics and copied in countless sizes and materials; smaller replicas were often acquired by “Grand Tour” travelers as elegant decorative pieces for aristocratic and upper-middle-class salons, the original vase has been part of the Barrel Collection in Glasgow since 1979, having been owned by the Earls of Warwick for 200 years prior to that—hence its name.
