Larger-than-life head of a Dvarapala guardian. Southeast Asia, Khmer, Bakheng period, 10th century. Height approx. 48 cm; 58 cm with base. Fine- to medium-grained sandstone. Modern pedestal. A finely crafted head of a Dvarapala with a calm, introspective expression and the characteristic “Angkorian smile.” The closed eyes with slightly lowered eyelids, the harmoniously proportioned mouth, and the sculpturally modeled lips lend the face a contemplative dignity typical of the early Bakheng style under King Yasovarman I (ca. 889–910 CE). The conical hair knot is regularly structured with small grid-like patterns and is framed by a flat, profiled headband. The earlobes are elongated, likely having once been adorned with jewelry. Includes original catalog from Sotheby’s 1989! Copy of *Oriental Art Magazine*, USA 1970! Partially broken section at the upper hair knot. Slight wear, minor chips. Otherwise very well preserved. Provenance: Formerly Gorny & Mosch Auction 316, Lot 338. Acquired in the 1990s by Georg L. Hartl, Munich. Formerly Sotheby’s, 1989, Lot 85.
