Exceptionally large polychrome court lady (“Fat Lady”) holding a vessel. China, Tang Dynasty, 618–907 CE. Height approx. 68 cm, width approx. 28.5 cm. Terracotta with polychrome paint. An exceptionally large and high-quality example of the characteristic type known as the “Fat Ladies” of the Tang period. A standing court lady in a long, high-waisted robe with voluminous sleeves and a color-contrasting chest area. She holds a small round vessel in front of her body; one hand is clearly modeled, while the other remains hidden beneath the wide-falling sleeve. Particularly striking is the strictly rhythmic, almost geometrically rendered drapery with long vertical folds. Beneath the floor-length hem, the strikingly high, volute-shaped tips of her footwear protrude; at the back, the robe extends into a small train. The figure stands on a flat, irregularly shaped base that suggests a floor surface. The full face, with narrow eyes, a small mouth, and rosy cheeks, is framed by a voluminous, side-swept updo featuring a striking, tall, flower-shaped hair knot (Gaoji); behind the side sections of hair, the sculpturally rendered ears stand out. The elaborate hairstyle corresponds to the courtly ladies’ fashion of the Tang period. Also noteworthy is the extensively preserved polychromy, featuring red and green robe details as well as floral decoration. Comes with a French Antiques Certificate! With two TL analyses! Intact. Minor scuffs, chips, and restorations. Extensive remnants of the polychromy preserved. Provenance: Formerly G.H., France, since before 1985.
