Figurative vessel. Moche, ca. 1–200 CE. H 15 cm. Terracotta with black engobe. The vessel is shaped like a man sitting cross-legged, with his hands resting on his knees and his mouth wide open. He wears a hemispherical cap, the tip of which is decorated with an incised zigzag pattern. His eyes are almond-shaped, with crow’s feet at the corners. His long hair falls down his neck. The earlobes and nose are pierced—separately crafted pieces of jewelry were once attached there. See Christie’s Live Auction 5207, June 7, 2005, Lot 323 (hammer price: 2,880 euros). Accompanied by a TL report by Ralf Kotalla, 1993! Minimal chipping; otherwise intact. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of R.K., North Rhine-Westphalia, acquired in 1993 from Spencer Throckmorton.
