Idol. Olmec, Middle Preclassic, ca. 900–400 B.C. H 41 cm, W 15 cm. Calcite with traces of red paint. Depiction of the goddess of spring and death (known as “Xipe” in Nahua). The lips were once painted red with iron oxide (traces of which are still visible) to symbolize the blood or sap intended to bring forth new life. The arms are positioned on the abdomen, a sign of tranquility and death. Accompanied by a material analysis report from Antiques Analytics, 2007! Intact, mounted on a metal stand. Provenance: formerly Tedden Khayon, Indo-Asia Art Foundation, Dortmund, before 1970.
