350 - A very fine festive icon featuring detailed miniature painting depicting the Resurrection and the Descent into Hell of Christ, as well as 16 major feasts. Russia, late 18th–early 19th century. H 31 cm; W 26.5 cm. Tempera on a chalk ground on wood, with a gold ground. Two sponki on the back. Kovcheg. A particularly high-quality feast-day icon featuring exceptionally fine, highly detailed miniature painting. Despite the small format, the figures, faces, vestments, architecture, and landscapes are rendered with great precision. The generous use of gold ground enhances the decorative effect. In the center is a multi-scene depiction of the Resurrection of Christ and the Descent into Hell (Anastasis), surrounded by 16 scenes from the Orthodox feast cycle. In the four corners are the four Evangelists depicted as scribes. All scenes feature Church Slavonic inscriptions. Several older handwritten collection or dealer notes, including a German-language attribution, likely to be read as “Moscow School, 18th century, second half.” Very fine miniature painting! Remarkably well preserved. Minor age-related wear and slight loss of paint or ground, primarily at the edges and corners. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Dr. Gerhard-Joseph Busch, Bavaria, since the 1970s.
