Gorny & Mosch

344 - Part of a Christian amulet made of embossed gold. Roman, second third of the 4th century A.D. 2.56 g, preserved width 3.9 cm. Round medallion depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments in several registers. Top left: the raising of Lazarus; in the center, Christ carrying a lamb; and on the right, a boy in a praying posture. In the second register, on the left: Noah in the ark; followed to the right by the three youths in the fiery furnace and the casting of Jonah into the sea, including the Ketos. At the bottom left, the Ketos spews Jonah out; this is followed by Jonah in the gourd shade and, on the right, the miracle of Peter’s well. A fantastic gem of early Christianity! Includes copies of the catalog and the French export license! Gold! Antiquely trimmed, with tiny tears along the edge. Provenance: Formerly from Gorny & Mosch Auction 227, 2014, Lot 270 (hammer price 11,000 euros); prior to that, in a private English collection since the 1990s. The design of the amulet corresponds exactly to the front-side depictions on Constantinian frieze sarcophagi. See G. Koch, Early Christian Sarcophagi. Handbook of Archaeology XX (2000).
