Head of a pharaoh (Apries?) wearing a blue crown. Late Period, 26th Dynasty, 664–525 B.C. White limestone, H 8 cm. Beardless, somewhat plump head of a pharaoh wearing the so-called “blue crown.” The crown is decorated with circles of dots. An uraeus snake sits above the forehead, and a falcon spreads its wings at the nape of the neck. Includes a copy of the inventory card from the Hollander-Barzilai Collection and a copy of the auction catalog. The nose has been restored; there is a break at the neck; otherwise, minimal chipping. Provenance: From the Hollander-Barzilai Collection, Brussels (since 2004). Ex PIASA April 26, 2004, lot 364. Private collection, Paris, since 1960. It has been assumed that this depicts the Saite pharaoh Apries, who repeatedly attempted to expand his realm into the Near East. In 588 B.C., he marched on Jerusalem to end the siege by Nebuchadnezzar II. Nebuchadnezzar initially withdrew but returned the following year, conquered the city, and led a large portion of the Jewish population into exile in Babylon.
