Magical gem made of orange carnelian. Roman, 2nd–3rd centuries AD. Diameter 22.7 mm. Long oval with a convex side. Stars and letters on the convex side. On the smooth side, a Greek inscription: ΒΑΚΑ/ΞΙΧΥΧ/ΘΩZΑZ/ΑZΩΘ. Traces of sinter, intact. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of A.K., with D. T. prior to 2016, Brussels Art Market. The word ΒΑΚΑΞΙΧΥΧ is translated as “soul” or “son of Khukh” (Keku = XYX, darkness). The magic formula refers to the underworld or primordial chaos and the solar creator god. The word ΘΩZΑZΑZΩΘ can be read both forward and backward. It is a palindrome, though its meaning is unknown; see S. Michel, *Colorful Stones—Dark Images: Magical Gems* (2001), p. 36, No. 25.
