185 - Late Antique clay lamp with a peacock. North Africa, 4th–5th centuries AD. Hayes Type II. L 14 cm, H 5.3 cm. Made of reddish clay. Tapered handle, egg-shaped body, and rounded spout with a burn hole. Two filling holes on the belly. A peacock on the belly. Alternating concentric filled circles and squares on the shoulder. Traces of sinter; soot marks on the spout; intact. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Y. D., France; acquired between 1930 and 1950; in the family’s possession ever since.
