Life-size bronze arm. Roman Imperial period. 1st–2nd centuries CE or earlier. Total length: 36 cm. Cast in the lost-wax process. Fragment of a male bronze statue that may have been slightly larger than life-size. The bare left arm was slightly bent. On the upper side of the forearm is an irregularly rectangular chip, which could be explained by the fact that another object—perhaps a parazonium—was once attached here. This, along with the presumably larger-than-life size, suggests that the piece is part of a statue of an emperor or a deity. Magnificent olive-green patina! Fragmentary with missing sections. Provenance: Formerly in the J.K. Collection, Bavaria, since before 2010. Numerous technical details provide insight into the manufacturing process of ancient, large-scale bronze sculptures. At the lower edge of the upper arm are tooth-like notches that served to secure the attachment of the hand. Missing sections and traces of vent holes were concealed by patches, some of which have since fallen off, while others remain in place.
