150-A - Relief head of a fist-fighter. Roman Imperial period, 3rd century A.D. Hollow-cast bronze, H 29 cm. Life-size head of a middle-aged man facing left. He wears a short beard and a short hairstyle in the style of the soldier-emperors. However, a few longer strands of hair have been left at the back of the head, spreading out irregularly in a radial pattern. Green patina, with fragmentary burn marks along the edges. Prepared on the inside for mounting on a stone slab. Reconstructed from several fragments. Provenance: Formerly in the N.W. Collection, Munich; acquired by inheritance before 1970. The characteristic hairstyle is also found, for example, on a contemporary portrait bust in the Collection of Classical Antiquities in Berlin (Inv. Sk 465). Cf.: M. Junkelmann, “Greek Athletes in Rome,” in *Caesars and Gladiators*, Hamburg exhibition (2000), pp. 80ff., esp. p. 83, fig. 72.
