Bust of a Roman lady. 1st century A.D. White, fine-grained marble. Height: 38 cm (including base). A smaller-than-life portrait of a woman of the Roman upper class with an elaborate, luxurious hairstyle consisting of three rows of curls above the forehead, side braids, and a long bun at the nape of the neck. The bust—which may be ancient but is certainly not part of the original sculpture—is carved from white marble with gray veining and depicts a richly adorned robe in the style of the 2nd century AD. The entire piece rests on a modern pedestal. The tip of the nose has been restored, the head is a later addition, and there are repairs to the base. Provenance: Formerly from the Bonhams London auction on December 1, 2020, Lot 73; formerly from a private collection in the U.S.; acquired from Royal Athena Galleries, New York (2010); held by Galerie Chenel in Paris, previously in a French private collection and at Drouot.
Delivery is optional. You can use the carrier of your choice. The stated price does not include the lot price or the auction house fees.
