136 - Legs of a statue of Aphrodite. Roman Imperial period, 2nd–3rd centuries AD. White, fine-grained marble. H 36 cm, W 28 cm, D 19 cm. Lower section of a sub-life-size statue of a nude woman, with a drape falling over a vessel on one side and a dolphin gazing straight downward on the other. All mounted on a shared antique base. Fragmentary with chipped edges. Provenance: From the Belgian art market. Acquired from Marcel Cornille in 2008. The goddess of love was likely depicted in the famous Cnidian style, which had been created by Praxiteles for the temple at Cnidus. This was the first portrait to show the goddess completely nude as she emerges from the water and places her robe on a vessel. The dolphin is an addition by the Roman copyist, who gave the marble figure greater structural stability.
