Gorny & Mosch

133 - Female torso. Roman Imperial period, 1st century CE. White, fine-grained marble, height 21 cm. The section preserved extends from the hips to just below the knees of a sub-life-size figure of a girl. The girl was dressed in a peplos, the drape of which is still preserved at the right hip. The left leg was positioned slightly forward, so that the thigh is visible through the garment. The straight right leg is also visible beneath the heavy garment, while the sides and back are entirely covered by vertical folds. Provenance: From a private collection in Berlin. Ex Gorny & Mosch Auction 292, 2022, lot 59; previously acquired from Galerie Forum Romanum, Cologne, in the mid-1990s. The peplos was the typical women’s garment of the High Classical period. The most famous wearers are probably the Erechtheion Chores and Phidias’s statue of Athena. In the Late Classical period, fashion changed once again, and the chiton and himation became the canonical garments of Greek women. The peplos was made of heavy fabric that was turned up once at the top. In contrast to the lighter Hellenistic garments, the peplos conceals the body’s contours almost entirely. Only in a few places does a leg show through, while vertical folds dominate the lower part of the garment—folds that have even been compared to the fluting of Greek columns.
