Horseman on horseback. Canosa, 3rd century B.C. L 23.5 cm, W 8 cm, H 23 cm with base, 20.5 cm without base. Made of reddish clay with traces of white engobe and blue paint. A bearded horseman wearing a helmet, his right arm raised—originally holding an attribute—and his left arm stretched forward, clad in a neck scarf and a loincloth, is riding at a gallop. There is a small hole on his helmet for attaching a crest. There is also a small hole on the horse’s head to accommodate a separately crafted headdress—possibly made of a different material. The rider is secured to the horse with a wooden rod. The rider’s left hand is missing; the attribute held in the right hand is missing; the horse’s tail and all four feet have been reattached; the horse’s helmet plume and headdress are missing. Provenance: Formerly in the private collection of E.S.A., Paris; acquired in 1980 from Galerie Nina Borowski, Paris.
