86 - Adorant with a wreath of leaves. Phoenicia, ca. mid-5th century B.C. Reddish-brown terracotta, H 62 cm. A standing, somewhat corpulent youth in an ankle-length robe. He has curly hair and wears a wreath made of laurel or olive branches with a flower in the center. The figure stands on an altar-like base with a projecting plinth. With TL analysis! Traces of marine growth; arms broken, expertly restored. Provenance: formerly in the Ifergan Collection (Málaga). In the EU since at least 2020. Formerly in the Aphrodite Ancient Art Gallery, New York, prior to 1983. Previously in the Marwan Shehab Collection, acquired from Asfar & Sarkis, 1964. With Spanish export license! Published in: S. Garcia Alfonso (ed.), *Shipwrecked Gods* (2023), p. 128, cat. no. 96. The figure may be associated with the Festival of the Resurrection (egersis) of Melqart, celebrated in February, during which participants wore wreaths of leaves and flowers.
