83 - Ship. Phoenicia, ca. late 6th – first half of the 5th century B.C. Reddish-brown terracotta, L 47 cm, H 12 cm. Depiction of a ship with four benches: The forward benches held crew members rowing in two rows; on the rear bench, which is set back from the others, there was an indistinct object. Another man, the helmsman, sat at the bow facing the rowers. The upper outer wall of the ship has multiple holes. Traces of marine growth; missing fragments; crew figures preserved only in fragments; expertly restored. Provenance: Formerly in the Ifergan Collection (Málaga). Formerly in the Aphrodite Ancient Art Gallery, New York, prior to 1983. Previously in the Marwan Shehab Collection, acquired from Asfar & Sarkis in 1964. With Spanish export license! Published in: S. Garcia Alfonso (ed.), Shipwrecked Gods (2023), p. 158, cat. no. 122. The Phoenicians were one of the most advanced seafaring nations of the ancient world. This terracotta piece depicts a shallow-water vessel. This type of ship was mostly used for loading and unloading larger ships or for anchoring maneuvers. Since their sides were very low, many ancient ships had relatively high bows to protect the crew and cargo from the swell.
