72 - Large Greek amphora for wine. Chios, 6th century B.C. H 71 cm, ø 36 cm. Light brown clay, beige slip, painted in dark to reddish-brown. Lines on the body and neck; serpentine lines on the shoulder in the shape of a horizontal figure-eight; and a circle with a long line extending downward around the base of the handle. Behind one handle is a graffito reading XXXX II. Extremely rare and of great beauty! Includes a copy of the invoice! Parts of the shoulder, neck, and rim, as well as one handle, are missing and have been restored. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of A. M., Ascona / Amsterdam, acquired in 1970 in Locarno from the Fasciani-Escher Gallery. The beige coating and the beautiful painting make its use as a transport amphora rather unlikely. Rather, as with the painted Corinthian and Attic vases, it is likely a representative version of an amphora intended for use at symposia.
