71 - Large Greek amphora for wine. Chios, 6th century B.C. H 70 cm, ø 36 cm. Light brown clay, beige slip, painted in dark to reddish-brown. Lines on the body and neck; serpentine lines on the shoulder in the shape of a horizontal figure-eight; and a circle with a long line extending downward around the base of the handle. Extremely rare and of great beauty! Includes a copy of the invoice! Intact, partially covered with sinter. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of A. M., Ascona / Amsterdam, acquired in 1970 in Locarno from the Fasciani-Escher Gallery. The beige glaze and the beautiful painting make it rather unlikely that this was used as a transport amphora. Rather, as with the painted Corinthian and Attic vases, it is likely a representative amphora version intended for use at symposia.
