Fragment of an Attic red-figure bowl. 400–390 B.C. 11.1 x 14.4 cm. The interior decoration, featuring a meander pattern, depicts a myth that is likely rarely portrayed, in which a young man—identified as a traveler by his petasos and chlamys—is speaking with a bird. The rest of the exterior decoration shows a young man sitting on a rock, with the lower part of a woman’s figure behind him. Also of interest is the handle ornament, which features an acanthus leaf—a rather rare element in this context—as a lateral motif. Includes a copy of the invoice! Assembled from two fragments and mounted on a profiled base of gray marble. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of A. M., Ascona / Amsterdam; acquired in 1970 in Locarno from the Fasciani-Escher Gallery. This depiction may be the only one to date showing the Lapith Mopsos in his role as a seer on the Argonauts’ expedition. He learned his abilities from Apollo and is said to have understood the language of birds. He is also mentioned as a fighter against the Centaurs and as a participant in the Calydonian Boar Hunt.
