Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Il Guercino (Cento 1591 – Bologna 1666) King David, c. 1650; red chalk, 27 x 23.5 cm, small tears and missing areas Lit.: Bolognese Drawings from the 16th to the 18th Century, Bologna/London 1968, Cat. No. 35 This drawing relates to the King David in the Spencer Collection at Althorp, for which it may be a final preparatory study. In the painting, the harp is absent, and David’s identity is clarified by the verse from the Psalms engraved on the stone, which replaces the angel—a motif that is too familiar—in this drawing. A very similar angel, however, appears in the lower left corner of the painting of the Sibyl of Samos, which is the pendant to the previous work in the same collection. The date of around 1650, assigned to the two paintings, can therefore be proposed for this drawing. Bolognese Drawings from the 16th to the 18th Century, Bologna/London 1968, p. 25
