Eugène PRINTZ (1878–1948) Side table featuring two stacked circular trays made of palm wood veneer, resting on four curved legs that end in brass feet with a cloud-like oxidized patina Model created around 1934 H: 55.5 cm / Diameter: 80 cm Bibliography: - “Mobilier et Décoration,” June 1934, similar model reproduced on p. 219 - “Mobilier et Décoration,” November 1934, similar model reproduced on p. 412 - Guy Bujon and Jean-Jacques Dutko, “Printz,” Editions du Regard, Paris, 1986, our model reproduced on p. 115 Born in Paris in 1889 into a family of cabinetmakers, Eugène Printz acquired an exceptional mastery of traditional furniture-making techniques at a very early age. Trained in his family’s workshop in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, he became familiar with the great 18th-century designs, developing a high level of craftsmanship and a keen appreciation for precious materials, high-quality finishes, and refined details. Beginning in the 1920s, he gradually shifted his work toward a more modern aesthetic, without ever compromising the excellence of classical cabinetmaking. His collaboration with Pierre Chareau and his participation in the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts helped bring his talent to the forefront. From then on, he exhibited regularly at major Parisian salons and quickly established himself as one of the leading designers of his time. His creations captivated a prestigious clientele, while the Mobilier National also entrusted him with major commissions. His aesthetic language is based on a subtle balance between architectural precision, elegant proportions, and rich ornamentation. In the mid-1930s, his designs evolved toward more generous forms and rounded volumes—sometimes described as baroque—while retaining the particular attention to construction and functionality that characterizes his work. The piece on display perfectly illustrates this quest for balance. Its palm wood veneer, with its expressive grain, reveals the full richness of this exotic wood, while the gilded brass legs with a cloud-like patina elegantly highlight its lines. The combination of precious wood and metal reflects Printz’s taste for contrasting materials and sophisticated finishes. A particularly demanding cabinetmaker, he personally oversaw every stage of his furniture’s creation, from the drawings and models down to the smallest details of craftsmanship. Surrounded by skilled artisans, he ensured that formal innovation never came at the expense of the quality of craftsmanship or practicality. This commitment, combined with a constant pursuit of perfection, remains one of the most remarkable hallmarks of his work.
