Jean DESPUJOLS (1886–1965) Basket of Fruit and a Dove, 1921 Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower right Dimensions: 195 x 132 cm Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux and later in Paris, Jean Despujols won the second Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1914, which granted him admission to the Villa Medici, where he resided until 1923. He played a part in the revival of French painting during the interwar period, marked by the “Return to Order” movement and a renewed interest in the classical heritage. Created in 1921, this monumental composition reflects this sensibility, in which the balance of the composition and the nobility of the forms play an essential role. The softness of the skin tones, the harmony of the drapery, and the luminous color palette lend the work an atmosphere of serenity, blending classical heritage with decorative refinement.
