Georges FLAMAND (active 1895–1920) "Inspiration" Large bronze inkwell with gold and silver patina Plate set in onyx and adorned with glass cabochons Signed "G Flamand" Circa 1900 Dimensions: 53.5 x 29 cm Bibliography: Jessica Goldring, “Dynamic Beauty: Sculpture of Art Nouveau Paris,” published by Benjamin Macklowe Gallery and Kathleen Moore; a similar piece is reproduced on page 124. A student of Alexandre Falguière, Georges Flamand developed, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a body of work at the intersection of Art Nouveau and Symbolism. This bronze inkwell with gold and silver patinas, titled “Inspiration,” features an allegorical figure wearing a floral crown, lost in reverie, set within a composition of supple, sinuous lines. A stylized plant motif echoes this figure, enriching the composition, while the onyx plaque and green glass cabochons provide subtle contrasts in materials and colors. Through the balance of its composition and the refined combination of its materials, this inkwell reflects Georges Flamand’s decorative sensibility and his commitment to the Art Nouveau aesthetic.
