[CHAUMETTE] In the margin of a handwritten letter signed “Michel, Second Lieutenant” and dated May 1793 (in which the writer, while traveling in Nice, complained of “(…) the insubordination of the noncommissioned officers, their lack of respect for the law (…)” and requesting travel compensation); there are 8 handwritten lines signed by Chaumette supporting this request [Pierre Gaspard Chaumette, known as Anaxagoras; along with Fouché, he was one of the zealous architects of the Reign of Terror, particularly in Lyon. Executed by guillotine in 1794]. 1 page in folio; fine copy. “I beg my friend to order that consideration be given to Citizen Michel’s request. It would not be fitting for patriots to be the victims of an aristocracy of insubordinate officers who despise the minister’s orders and trample the law underfoot. Chaumette.”
