[MANUSCRIPT] XXX [MAGNE De MAROLLES] Life of André Doria de Melphes, Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Commander-in-Chief of the Naval Forces of Emperor Charles V and Philip II, King of Spain, translated from the Latin by Charles Sigonius. Undated manuscript (18th century), in-4 format, 177 pages, beautifully calligraphied (with a few rare erasures and corrections), accompanied at the end of the text by the signed autograph approval of Abbé Guyot (royal censor) dated September 17, 1782; note his initials on every page. An inserted sheet pasted to the last leaf states that Abbé Guyot recommended this manuscript to Mr. de Neville, “general director of the bookstore,” though he took care to “modify one of your notes, which is of little use anyway but which might cause offense (…)”. A recent pencil annotation reveals the history of our copy, and after a comparative examination of the handwriting with No. 124 in our catalog (same provenance); everything suggests that this translation is by Gervais-François Magné de Marolles; the latter never proceeded with its publication. Copy in a period semi-hardcover binding covered with combed paper. One cover folded, spine missing, book block in excellent condition.
