Dimensions (document only): 41.5 x 25 cm. Detailed record of François Eugène Etard, “former soldier in the 42nd Line Infantry Regiment (…) convicted in Metz on November 21, 1843 (…) for complicity by receiving stolen goods in connection with a fraudulent theft committed at night in an inhabited house (…) sentenced to five years of hard labor (…) arrived at the penal colony on April 17, 1844 (…) On September 6, 1848, the above-named individual was today released from the chain and placed at the disposal of the mayor of the city of Toulon to be sent to Aubagne (…) the place of residence he has chosen.” Note the physical description of the prisoner and his tattoos in the left-hand column.
