Pablo Picasso 1881 Málaga – 1973 Mougins – “Cruchon Hibou” (Small Owl Jug) A.R. 293, (1955) – stoneware, white body. Painted with engobe in blue, black, white, and brown; knife-engraved and partially glazed. Inscribed in black with a brush on the base: EDITION PICASSO MADOURA. Impressed marks: EDITION PICASSO and MADOURA PLEIN FEU. H. 26 cm. Bibliography: Alain Ramié, *Picasso Catalogue de L’Oeuvre céramique éditée 1947–1971*, Vallauris 1988, no. 293; produced in an edition of 500 unnumbered copies. Picasso was the dominant figure in early 20th-century art. He studied in Barcelona and Madrid, and from 1901 onward worked in his studio in Montmartre. Following the so-called Blue and Rose periods, he created “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” in 1906–07, a seminal work of modernism, and radically broke with artistic tradition. He further developed the concept of Analytical Cubism introduced here over the next few years (1909–14) in close collaboration with George Braque. Picasso created a body of work comprising over 15,000 paintings, prints, sculptures, and ceramics that helped shape the modern art movement. - Condition: three chips on the rim in the black area—the black engobe inside the jug is cracked.
