Pablo Picasso 1881 Málaga – 1973 Mougins – Plate “Visage” No. 197, A.R. 494, (1963) – Stoneware, white body. Whitish glaze, painted in blue, black, and green. Inscribed in black with a brush on the base: No. 197 EDITION PICASSO 333/500 MADOURA. H. 2.5 cm, D. 25.5 cm. Bibliography: Alain Ramié, *Picasso Catalogue de L’Oeuvre céramique éditée 1947–1971*, Vallauris 1988, no. 494; produced in an edition of 500 copies. In the 1960s, Picasso created a series of plates featuring colorful faces. Picasso was the dominant figure in early 20th-century art. He studied in Barcelona and Madrid, and from 1901 onward worked in his studio in Montmartre. Following his so-called Blue and Rose periods, he created “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” in 1906–07, a seminal work of modern art, and radically broke with artistic tradition. He further developed the idea of Analytical Cubism presented here over the next few years (1909–14) in close collaboration with George Braque. Picasso created a body of work comprising over 15,000 paintings, prints, sculptures, and ceramics that helped shape the modern art movement. - Condition: minimal chip on the back edge—glaze worn in two small areas on the reverse.
