Signed lower right: Picasso. Mat. Framed under glass. Slightly browned. Light edge. Attached to the mat on the reverse with paper adhesive strips. After studying in Barcelona and Madrid, he worked in his studio in Montmartre beginning in 1901. Following the so-called Blue and Rose periods, he created “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” (1907), the seminal work of Modernism, and radically broke with artistic tradition. He further developed the idea of Analytical Cubism introduced here over the next few years (1909–14) in close collaboration with George Braque. His 1937 painting “Guernica” depicts the horrors of the Spanish Civil War. The dove of peace he designed for the 1949 World Peace Congress in Paris also became a global symbol of peace. His extensive body of work comprises an estimated 50,000 paintings, drawings, prints, collages, sculptures, and ceramics. Today, Picasso’s works are exhibited in numerous major museums. Major collections are located in Paris, Barcelona, and Madrid, among other places. The Museu Picasso in Barcelona and the Musée Picasso in Antibes were founded during his lifetime.
