Nolcken Artist of the New Objectivity Movement—Josef Suchý’s Drugstore in Prague—(1933) Oil on hardboard. 64 x 50.5 cm. 71 x 57 cm (dimensions including frame). Signed and dated lower left: nolcken / 1933. Partially illegible pencil inscription on the reverse: House in Prague / (...). Framed. - Provenance: Formerly the W.P.E. Eggers Collection. The painting depicts the Josef Suchý drugstore in Prague and is firmly rooted in the tradition of New Objectivity. With a keen eye and a calm, detailed painting style, the artist captures the historic corner building with its richly decorated gable, figurative niches, and striking sun relief. Warm ochre and brown tones lend the scene an almost timeless tranquility, while the small passersby in front of the store hint at big-city life in the 1930s. An atmospheric testament to old Prague.
