Werner Fechner 1892 Berlin – 1973 Ravensburg – "Primroses" – (1930) Oil on canvas. 44.5 x 31 cm. 57 x 43.5 cm (dimensions including frame). Monogrammed and dated lower left: WF (ligated) (19)30. Inscribed on the back of the stretcher: Werner Fechner / Weimar / Primroses (...). Framed. Werner Fechner studied at the Weimar Art School and was a master student of Fritz Mackensen. In 1919, he continued his education at the newly founded Bauhaus in Weimar. In 1933, he was awarded the Albrecht Dürer Prize by the City of Nuremberg. Due to his Jewish ancestry on his mother’s side, he was barred from practicing his profession in 1935. The still life “Primroses,” created in 1930, shows clear echoes of New Objectivity. The precise rendering of the plant, the subdued color palette, and the clear geometric composition lend this unassuming subject a remarkable presence.
