Lindsay Daen 1923 Dunedin – 2001 Sarasota, Florida – “The Bed” – (1967) Bronze. Green-brown patina. 4/10. 22.5 x 50 x 14.5 cm. Signed and dated on the base: DAEN 1967. Dedication by the artist on the inside. A copy of the invoice is available. After serving in the military during World War II, Lindsay Daen studied sculpture from 1945 to 1948. His early ceramic works were inspired by Aboriginal art and Melanesian carvings. In 1948, he was admitted to the Royal Art Society in Sydney. In late 1949, he moved to the United States, where he settled in New Orleans in 1953. His career flourished in the French Quarter, and his works were exhibited at the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. In 1955, Daen accepted an invitation from the government of Puerto Rico to exhibit his sculptures on the island. Over the next four decades, he lived in San Juan’s Old City and had his bronze sculptures cast primarily in Madrid. Among his best-known works are “La Rogativa” in San Juan, “The Journeyer” in Philadelphia, and “Queen Adelaide” in Adelaide. His later sculptures can also be seen in public spaces throughout Puerto Rico. In the final years of his life, Daen collaborated with his third wife, Laura Ross Daen.
