Antique Pietra Dura Brooch Florence, circa 1900. Gold sheet and brass, gold-plated. Total weight: 17.9 g. Classic Pietra Dura work. Diameter: 4.8 cm. Brooch pin on the back. In good condition for its age. The Florentine art of pietra dura (Italian for “hard stone”) is one of the most time-honored techniques in Italian arts and crafts. Since the Renaissance, gemstones and hard stones of various colors have been assembled into intricate floral and ornamental compositions. Precise stone cutting and the careful coordination of the natural stone colors result in designs with an almost painterly effect. This brooch is a characteristic example of this time-honored Florentine craft from around 1900.
