Jade Thumb Ring and Jade Cicada Pendant China, probably Qing Dynasty or earlier (1644–1912). Jade, probably Hetian jade. Thumb ring dimensions: W 2.5 cm, D 3.5 cm. Inner diameter: 2.2 cm. Cicada pendant dimensions: approx. 4.6 x 3 x 1 cm. The thumb ring has a classic cylindrical shape and relatively thick walls. Condition: Signs of age. A very small chip on the rim of the ring. A Chinese jade thumb ring (in Chinese: banzhi) is a fascinating object that is far more than just a piece of jewelry. It combines craftsmanship, status symbolism, and cultural history. Originating in the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). Originally, archers wore such rings to protect their thumbs when drawing the bowstring. The cicada (chán) is one of China’s oldest symbols of good fortune. It represents: immortality and rebirth; purity and moral integrity; youth and vitality. The earliest depictions date back to the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.–A.D. 220). A jade cicada was placed on the tongue of the deceased to ensure their rebirth.
