Published by Izumiya Ichibei (Kansendo), 1852. Condition: slightly browned, with a central vertical crease, soiled, rubbed. Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III, was one of the most prolific and influential ukiyo-e artists of the 19th century. Famous for his dynamic depictions of Kabuki actors and elegant beauties, he dominated the Edo-period print market from the late 1820s through the 1850s. *Sono sugata yukari no utsushi-e* is a significant series that combines contemporary actors and figures with allusions to classical literature and historical themes. Kunisada’s precise linework, expressive faces, and richly patterned robes exemplify the sophisticated style of late Edo-period actor portraits and bijin-ga prints.
