Rare pink sandstone head of Vishnu from the Chandella period India, probably 10th–12th century. Sandstone, mounted on a wooden base. Dimensions without base: approx. 16.5 x 7 x 7.8 cm. Condition: Consistent with its age, showing clear signs of wear. Heavy wear, nicks, loss of material, and signs of weathering and erosion. - From a private German collection. The figure features large eyes and heavy eyelids beneath elegantly arched and sculpted eyebrows, crowned with a kiritamukuta. In Hinduism, Vishnu is one of the central deities and is regarded as the preserver of the universe. Mentioned as early as the Vedas, he was originally associated with the sun, light, and the cosmic order. His duties include preserving the world and protecting the cosmic balance, as well as combating evil and protecting humans and gods. The Chandella period (ca. 10th–11th centuries) is particularly well known for its sandstone sculptures, which are among the finest examples of Central Indian temple art. The dynasty ruled in Central India (primarily Madhya Pradesh) and created numerous sculptures that today appear in museums and auctions worldwide.
