Chinese silk embroidery depicting a qilin China, probably late Qing Dynasty (ca. 1850–1911). Fine silk embroidery, framed under glass. Viewing dimensions: 62.5 × 48.5 cm. Frame dimensions: 77 × 63.5 cm. Depiction of a qilin on billowing clouds, with the sun above and four different trees. In good condition with age-related signs of wear; slightly discolored. The Plexiglas has a small chip in the lower left corner. A qilin embroidery from the late Qing Dynasty, depicting the sun, clouds, and four different trees, most likely belongs to the category of rank-badge-like emblems (Mandarin Squares) or ceremonial textiles that combine mythological protective beings and cosmic symbols. The qilin symbolizes kindness, wisdom, cosmic harmony, and legitimate authority.
