PENKALA FÜLL-BLEISTIFT | PUBLICITÉE ANCIENNE | PLAQUE ÉMAILLÉE Condition (1) | Enamel sign, convex, stenciled, the image thickly filled in, GER around 1915, 25 x 40 cm, Torpedo Email, Frankfurter Emaillirwerke, Neu-Isenburg u. Berlin, a design from the painter and writer Georg Achselstetter (1883-1973). Penkala, named after the Croatian tinker and inventor Eduard Slavoljub Penkala (1871–1922), was a mechanical pencil patented early on in several European countries, which was always advertised as "always sharp and ready to write". The recurring theme in Penkala’s advertising: the pencil, tucked behind the ear, ready for use with a simple squeeze. Sometimes wedged between a hare’s ears or, as seen here, behind the gentleman’s oversized ear - its long nose reminiscent of a mouse. In Sweden, we were aware of only a few examples of the large-format, green version. As for this small-format version, which bears witness to early enamel craftsmanship, we are likely dealing with the only known example - one that has lain safely tucked away for decades in a special collection, its surface boasting a fabulous gloss. | This is an authentic original, no replica or fake.
