LUZINA - FÜR WÄSCHE WASCHENPUBLICITÉE ANCIENNE | PLAQUE ÉMAILLÉE Condition (2+) | Enamel sign, convex, thickly stenciled, also lithographed, Zagreb/CRO around 1910, 65 x 100 cm, Emaillierwerke Bonyhád, an impressive piece from a detergent manufacturer in the Balkans - at the time, the Kingdom of Croatia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, so the sign was commissioned and produced in Hungary. The enamellers there came from Germany and the Czech Republic and taught the craft to local apprentices. Upon closer inspection of the sign, it’s no surprise that this piece was found in the archives of the now-closed enamel workshop, as it is a masterpiece of craftsmanship: the enamel on the packaging, lettering, and emblems was applied in a thick, icing-like layer. The depiction of the lady was first stenciled on thickly and then refined with hand-painting. Even today, the piece retains its high gloss, with rich and deep colors, and is free of any distracting scratches.
