20th-century Chinese school. “Figures on a Hillside.” Ink on fabric. Stamps on the right side. Measurements: 24 cm (diameter); 37.5 x 38.5 cm (frame). Executed in a circular format, the composition evokes the ideal of retreat and contemplation of nature characteristic of the Chinese painting tradition. A bearded figure rests at the foot of a large pine tree, accompanied by a youthful figure, while his gaze is directed toward the open landscape and the full moon. The intensity of the ink in the foliage and the textures of the trunk are hallmarks of the distant mountains, creating depth through the alternation between densely rendered areas and open spaces. The delicate rendering of the figures and the subtle accents of color enrich a scene of poetic character, whose balance is completed by the calligraphic inscription and the red seals on the right-hand side.
