ÉMILE GALLÉ (Nancy, France, 1846–1904). Art Nouveau vase, ca. 1900. Acid-etched multilayered glass with floral decoration. Signed. In good condition. Measurements: 11 x 13 x 13 cm. This vase is a representative example of the artistic work of Émile Gallé, one of the great masters of French Art Nouveau glass. The piece reflects his interest in nature as his primary source of inspiration, as well as his mastery of decorative techniques that allowed him to achieve rich chromatic hallmarks and effects of depth. It features a globular body with a gently rounded profile, tapering toward the mouth and topped by a slightly flared rim. The surface is decorated with branches, leaves, and flowers in reddish tones, etched onto a yellow background with warm hues. The delicacy of the plant motifs and the contrast between the layers of glass create an attractive effect of relief and transparency, a hallmark of the naturalistic style developed by Gallé. Émile Gallé was one of the leading figures of European Modernism and the founder of the École de Nancy in 1901. His body of work spanned art glass, ceramics, and furniture, and he was noted for his technical innovations and his poetic interpretation of the plant world. He achieved international recognition at the Paris World’s Fairs of 1889 and 1900. His work is represented in institutions such as the Musée de l’École de Nancy, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
