Double-shafted column-pedestal. France, circa 1880. Veined marble, gilded bronze, and cloisonné enamel. In good condition. Measurements: 78 x 50.5 x 38 cm. French decorative taste in the last third of the 19th century was characterized by a revival of historical models and the combination of fine materials, in keeping with the eclecticism and sumptuousness of the Napoleon III style. This column-pedestal embodies this aesthetic through an architecturally inspired composition, in which cream- and amber-toned marble is combined with refined gilded bronze mounts and cloisonné enamel details. The structure features a rectangular top supported by two slender columns with cylindrical shafts, topped by bell-shaped gilt-bronze capitals adorned with plant motifs. At their bases, the collars, decorated with polychrome enamels, introduce a delicate chromatic contrast. The piece rests on a stepped plinth, embellished with metal moldings and bronze feet with sinuous profiles. The careful articulation of its elements and the richness of the marble’s natural veining lend the piece a remarkable elegance, characteristic of prestigious French interiors of the late 19th century.
