Pair of ceremonial heraldic armchairs. Central America, 19th century. Carved cocobolo wood with fabric upholstery. In good overall condition, with slight scuffs; wear on the upholstery. Measurements: 172 x 65 x 60 cm (each). This pair of armchairs stands out for its monumental size and the richness of its heraldic decoration, characteristics typical of ceremonial furniture intended for stately interiors and institutional spaces. The high backs feature slender Solomonic columns, crowned by spearhead-shaped finials. In the center is a prominent eagle with outstretched wings, bearing a shield with a diagonal band and flanked by three stars. The upper finial, adorned with laurel garlands, accentuates the solemn character of the ensemble. Stylistically, the pieces reflect the historicist taste of the 19th century, which revived elements of European Baroque furniture and reinterpreted them within the context of the American decorative arts. In Central America, cabinetmaking of this period combined the influence of European models with the use of tropical woods and a marked richness of ornamentation. The Solomonic columns, turned elements, and heraldic decoration reflect this tradition, lending the armchairs a distinctly ceremonial character. The meticulous craftsmanship of the carved elements attests to the quality of the cabinetmaking, enhanced by the wood’s grain. The seats and armrests, upholstered in beige fabric and finished with tacks, contrast with the frame. The front legs feature small casters, while the heraldic motifs reinforce the piece’s ceremonial character.
