Transitional-period chest of drawers. France, third quarter of the 18th century. Oak frame, veneered in rosewood, with feathered carving and limewood fillet work. Gilded bronze fittings and a marble top. In good condition, consistent with its age. Measurements: 88 x 80 x 51.5 cm. This French chest of drawers from the third quarter of the 18th century stands out for the quality of its cabinetmaking and the harmonious combination of curvilinear forms and geometric motifs, characteristic of the so-called Transition style. Modestly proportioned, it features two stacked drawers lined with feather-patterned rosewood, whose symmetrical arrangement highlights the natural grain pattern. The lemonwood fillets form delicate geometric frames with staggered motifs that extend along the sides and are marked by warm tones of the wood. Gilded bronze mounts adorn the handles, keyholes, uprights, and leg finials, while the veined marble top completes the ensemble. The piece reflects the evolution of French cabinetmaking from the sinuous forms of the Rococo toward the sobriety and order of Neoclassicism. The cabriole legs and the cut-out apron retain the elegance and dynamism characteristic of the Louis XV style, while the linear arrangement of the marquetry foreshadows the Louis XVI style. This blend of styles, combined with the precision of the veneering work and the refinement of its ornamental elements, illustrates the mastery achieved by French cabinetmakers during this period of stylistic transformation.
