Oratory or chapel, Portugal, reign of José I, c. 1760. Jacaranda wood and glass. Polychrome interior, partially gilded. Measurements: 162.5 x 108 x 42 cm. A jacaranda wood oratory, made in Portugal around 1760, during the reign of José I (1750–1777), at the height of the Rococo style. Conceived as a small architectural structure intended for private devotion, it is a representative example of the ornamental richness achieved by Portuguese religious furniture in the mid-18th century. Its composition, with a distinctly theatrical character, is organized around a central glass-enclosed section, framed by a structure of sinuous profiles and abundant floral carvings. The upper section, with its pronounced sense of ascent, concentrates much of the decorative effect: scrolls, leaves, flowers, and rocaille-inspired motifs are arranged symmetrically around a central cartouche, crowned by a rosette. The sides, equally intricately carved, extend this ornamental language through plant motifs and forms. The choice of jacaranda wood—valued for its dark hue, decorative qualities, and association with Portuguese overseas trade routes—adds further interest to the piece. Its hallmarks of contrast with the polychromatic colors and gilding of the interior accentuate the sumptuous character of the ensemble and highlight the close relationship between Portuguese decorative arts and the economic and cultural context of the Portuguese Empire during the 18th century.
